While looking for inspiration for the upcoming Produsage Project, I found the International Society for Teaching in Education (ISTE) and a set of standards they have published for students.
These standards are then broken down into sub-standards and each standard and sub-standard has a video to see the standard "in action."
There are also standards for educators, education leaders, and coaches. You are able to view the standards on their website, and you can have access to their resources and community by becoming a member. For now, I will focus on the standards for students and how I plan to use them in my upcoming project.
I have decided to make a multi-part lesson. The lesson with be centered in Google Classroom; this is where we will all come together and share our work.
First, students will curate a collection of resources to solve and write two-step equations. I will give the students a tutorial of Padlet and Pinterest and allow them to choose which platform works best for them. I will also be open to other platforms they have had experience with if the student wishes. (Knowledge Constructor and Empowered Learner)
Students will then share their collection on GC and visit other students collections, commenting on others work and possibly adding to their collections. (Digital Citizenship, Knowledge Constructor, Global Collaborator)
Students will view my Sutori Story on solving and writing two-step equations. Students will utilize the Discussion Thread on GC to ask questions and answer their peers' questions. (Empowered Learner, Digital Citizenship, Global Collaborator)
I will provide an example of a Sutori "Real-World Math" Story. Then students will use Sutori to create their own. They will use their collection of resources, peer feedback, and other resources on the internet to complete their Story. (Empowered Learner, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Creative Communicator, Computational Thinker, Global Collaborator)
Then they will post the link to their Story in GC and provide feedback to their classmates. (Digital Citizenship)
What do you guys think? I would love some feedback, and if you get the chance, check out ISTE!

Hey Jodie! I think that this is an excellent idea! I especially like how you managed to incoporate a produsage component where students were leveraging each others' findings to develop their own answers (everyone is both a producer and user of content). Having said that, does using solving two-step equations as the subject of the lesson provide enough complexity so that there can be variation in the students' eventual submissions? My only concern is that you end up with student answers being mostly the same because of the small scope of exploration - unless of course that is the intent?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, students have such a hard time with two-step equations, I am hoping this helps them grasp the concept so it is not something that has to be revisited as often. This is for 7th grade math (which I taught in SY2018/2019). When I was teaching Algebra II I would have students that did not know how to properly solve simple two-step equations, so I really want them to have a concrete understanding of the concept. The produsage part is great because it is an artifact they can refer back to if needed and, hopefully, by creating their own resources and examples they will be more invested in learning the steps.
DeleteAlso, thank you so much for coming by and offering feedback! I really appreciate it! I will take into consideration a way to have them extend the concept for those students who have the ability :)
DeleteOh no problem! I'm not a teacher so I have no idea how difficult a two-step equation could be :D
DeleteAll the best for your produsage assignment!
I am doing something similar with students finding resources and sharing with others. I will be using Diigo by making a group that students can share their resources, comment and like others resources as well as have two topics for discussions. Your idea is great and I like that we are doing something similar on totally different topics and different social media platforms! Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteAre you in or have you taken EME5050? I'm in that class this semester and we use the ISTE standards. I think it's a great idea to utilize these standards especially if you are writing a lesson plan. Using this will ensure that you are utilizing the technology for a purpose.
ReplyDeleteHello Jodie,
ReplyDeleteYou are an experienced teacher! I can see that through your project plan. I like that you used standards to make your lessons more meaningful and worthwhile. Even though it is a typical topic in the subject, the teaching method and tools are creative.
One question: I am unfamiliar with ISTE. How prestigious is it?
