Like many people, I have friends all over the world, and thanks to technology, we are able to keep up with each other easily. Well, two of my friends want to learn how to play Magic the Gathering (MTG), we have been talking about Magic on our group video chats (we use Zoom and Houseparty), and our group chat through Messenger. But to play, we had to get a little creative.
We used Google Hangout, each of us with two google accounts, one facing the person, the other aimed at the board where the cards would go. My friend in Texas had the best set up, using her computer to show her face and see the other screens, and a tripod holding her phone above her board to show her cards. I did something similar, but I do not have a tripod, so I had to build a structure to hold up my phone above my cards (see picture). My friend in Norway used two laptops, one tilted to show her cards, the other for her to see our screens.

The end result was three friends in three different countries, learning and playing together. The tools available for connection and learning are so intertwined, I really see the potential for a sustained learning community online.
The part that I am missing is making the connections with others online, I find it harder to create and maintain a new relationship online. Do you find it harder or easier to develop relationships online? What about maintaining those relationships? Any tips from those of you who are better at it?

Ingenious solution!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope to get a tripod in the near future to make it a little easier :)
