I was so excited about the digital detox challenge. I was excited not to go online, knowing it was for school and not a procrastination tactic, I would be able to relax. This was something I would do during our yearly family vacation to Daytona. I would turn my cell phone off, put it away, and pull it out again at the end of the week, feeling refreshed. I was ready for that feeling, but it didn't' happen.

Originally, I was going to start on Friday, but I woke up that morning, and without thinking, I immediately looked at my phone to look at the news, like I do every morning. Then, while I was at work, we had a few hours of downtime, and I thought, why waste this time, I could be reading blogs and articles for class! So I talked myself into starting Saturday. Saturday, I stayed off social media, but we were meeting some family in Bamberg, I had to use Facebook Messenger to communicate with my cousin, and Google Maps for directions.

I was not able to get a full detox, though the time off social media was nice, I enjoyed being completely present with my family and the time we spent together. This is already something I try to be intentional with, but I think being intentional with my social media during downtime is something I still need to work on.

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and their detox!

  1. Staying off your phone fully is so difficult to do. My goal was to stay off of all social media while digitally detoxing. I still used my phone to make calls and text, but I didn't access any social media platforms at all. However, I still found myself pulling out my phone and hovering my thumb over apps such as Facebook without even thinking. It was so automatic for me. I did it first thing in the morning, throughout the day when I was bored, and in the middle of watching tv shows for no reason. The detox really showed me how much I want to access social media and helped me be more cognizant of the times I pull out my phone to aimlessly browse.
